‘Ammar Bin Yassir
(Born 567, died 657)‘Ammar Bin Yassir was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and a valiant soldier of Islam. He was one of the first to embrace Islam and did so at 48 years of age. When he told his Father, Yassir, an old Sabean freedman, and his mother, Sumayyah, an old black African slave woman, that he had become a Muslim; they too embraced Islam. ‘ Ammar suffered greatly as an early convert to Islam. While he himself was being tortured for having embraced Islam, he witnessed the severe tortures and the cruelest deaths suffered by his loving parents for having also embraced Islam. [Peace and Blessings be upon Rasul-Allah. May Allah be pleased with the Shahaba.]
A few years later, “Ammar was tortured again by the pagan Quraysh, with a burning rod on his chest. Under severe strains of that moment and remembering the slow savage deaths of his loving old parents, he yielded in praise of the idols to please the Quraysh and to save his neck. But the heart of this devout Muslim remained firm in faith. He was one of the most devout Muslims of his day, and became one of the most famous heroes of Islam. . [May Allah be pleased with him.]
‘Ammar was one on the early converts who the Prophet told to emigrate from Mecca to Abyssinia, Africa, to escape [the] persecution of the pagan Meccans. After Muhammad’s Hijrah in 622, he returned to Arabia, to Medina. He took part in the early Muslims campaigns and fought at Badr, at Uhud, and, in general in all the battles of the Prophet. In 641, he went to al-Yama-mah with the army of Khalid bin al-Walid where he lost one of his ears. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Caliph (Khalifa} of Islam, made him the governor of Kufa. In this capacity he took part in the [liberation] of [Khuzestan]. He was, from the first, a partisan of ‘Ali bin ‘Abi Talib, Muhammad’s cousin and the fourth Caliph of Islam. From 656 onwards, ‘Ali placed exceptional confidence in him. Before the Battle of the Camel, he helped to rally the people of Kufa to support ‘Ali, and he was one of those who led the Prophet’s widow, ‘Aishah, prisoner to Basra. He lost his life at Siffin in 567, when he was about 90 years old. Several centuries later, his tomb near Siffin was still pointed out. . [Peace and Blessings be upon Rasul-Allah. May Allah be pleased with the Shahaba.]
‘Ammar was considered to have had an excellent knowledge of the Hadith (Traditions} and, in addition, owed his renown to his devotion to Islam. Ha had a son, Muhammad, also famous for his knowledge of Hadith, and a daughter, Umm al-Hakam. . [Peace and Blessings be upon Rasul-Allah. May Allah be pleased with the Shahaba.]
